4Shootin' Hoops!
By Tal
Hello,I thought I would share some feedback on my experience with the "Spalding 88454G In-Ground Basketball System - 54" Glass Backboard."First, and as usual, Amazon did a great job shipping as promised. The free Super-saver on this was welcomed as the whole box was over 100# easy.Next, the installation manual is horrible hence the 4 star review. The pole section on this is two pieces, but the manual has pictures of 3 pieces, so I kept wondering if I was missing something! Once you lay out the two piece pole section, you realize you are not.As most other reviews have mentioned, connecting the two poles together [inserting one into the sleeve of the other] is near impossible. I'm a reasonably strong guy, and using a sledge hammer was only able to get the sleeve to slide in about 3.5 inches as opposed to the 6 inches the manual calls for. At the 3 inch marker, I realized the concrete in the pole and the 3 inch overlap would not pose any structural issues, and it did not.To further increase the strength of the concrete in the pole, I bought 2 pieces of 8 foot 3/8 rebar and inserted them in during the concrete pour. Total cost was about $6 at Lowes.HELPFUL ADVICE! DO NOT FOLLOW THE MANUAL and pour the concrete in the pole first against a saw horse as they describe. Instead, I would highly recommend joining the poles. inserting them into the tube in the ground and shovel the concrete in scoop by scoop from the top. My wife and I struggled just to get the empty pole into the sleeve. There is no way in heck, we could have done that with the pole loaded up with 150 pounds of concrete...Think about it!If you subscribe to this method, you can then easily insert the long 8 foot rebar pieces from the top and easily pour your concrete in with a scooper of some sort...Easy!One other recommendation, use good tape around the holes and where the two poles join as you pour into the pole as moisture will seep out and could stain your pole. After this, which is the hard part, the rest of the assembly [brackets/backboard/hoop] was a breeze. This thing is very sturdy once your base and pole have 700+ pounds of concrete in it and it looks great. Pretty easy to adjust as well.Me and my son have been playing "PIG" and I am the Pig..:)!I would highly recommend this product. Amazon rocks! Free Super -Saver shipping...Hello!Hope you find this article useful and please pay it forward!Tal -Spokane

4Heavy duty product - difficult instructions
By J. Kehoe
This is a great hoop once installed. High quality and very solid. I did have some difficulties putting it together, here are my lessons learned:1) Make sure you get the sleeve deep enough into the concrete. It should be up to the clamps, but not over. Mine was a few inches too high and it caused me some grief because the pole was a bit wobbly until I shimmed the gap between the concrete and the pole. I wish I would have gotten it lower to begin with, though.2) My instructions came with an insert - replacement instructions for two of the middle steps. Make sure you use these! My wife found them taped to the outside of the box, otherwise I would have missed them. The replacement instructions cover connecting the two pole pieces, filling in with concrete and putting it in the sleeve.3) Read each instruction multiple times and look at every warning box printed on the page. Trust me, you don't want to miss those warning boxes. They underline important steps to make sure they are done correctly.4) The instructions and diagrams are tricky. Take inventory of all your hardware and match it up with the piece list in the back of the instructions to make sure you have everything and that you are using the right size bolts and washers for each step.5) Connecting the two pole pieces together is an effort. I used a step ladder, several pieces of scrap wood (they will break when pounding against it), WD40 to grease the poles and a few cans of Miller Lite to grease the neighbors into helping. Keep smashing, it will fit together. Lord help you if you mess up the orientation and don't put the poles together correctly though, because the only way to resolve this would be a SawsAll and $400 for a new pole.6) Use lots of duct tape, or something else sturdy to tape the bottom hole in the pole when adding the concrete in the middle of the pole. Also, tape up all of the holes in the pole otherwise it will leak out.7) Make sure rebar is far inside the pole. The concrete will move it down. When it had set in mine, the rebar was sticking out the bottom a few inches and I had to saw it off.8) If the concrete/rebar is not level to the bottom of the inside of the pole, the pole will be unstable and wobbly mightily when inside the sleeve. Witness people, I had to remove the pole and chip away the excess concrete to make it flat.9) More Miller Lite is required to get the backboard up. I needed 2 neighbors and a six cans. Premium and larger quantities of beer may produce mixed results, like the backboard being installed upside down. Use at your own risk.10) Once the backboard was up, the weight of it drastically reduced the wobble in the pole. It is now very solid and sturdy.11) The breakaway rim was already completely assembled. I had to remove the bottom plate to the the bolts through. This caused some nervousness because it is spring loaded and I couldn't figure out why it was already assembled, but that was the correct thing to do. Oh, and make sure you leave the taped rubber and nuts on the backboard, that needs to stay. The angle is difficult to get the bolts through the rim and into the backboard, especially the upper bolts, but not impossible.Overall, I'm very pleased with this hoop. It's very good construction and high quality - just look at the net for proof of this - for a fairly low price.

3Nice goal but tough install
By Penberthy
This is a nice product but not easy to install. The main problem is fitting the two pole halves together. This was my second one of these goals (moved to different house) and both had the same problem. This time I thought I would be OK because I ground off the powder coat finish on the inner portion where the poles fit together, AND greased both halves. I STILL needed to use a 10-lb sledgehammer to get the pole halves to overlap 5" (instructions ask for 6"). By the time I got to 5" I was starting to mangle the bottom of the pole even using a 4x4 piece as a cushion. The other problem I had was the hardware is mislabeled in the instructions. In the parts list each bolt is given a number and a qty. In the instructions each bolt is identified by its number EXCEPT for one bolt which accidentally uses its qty as its number. I recommend laying out all the hardware separately for each step so you can figure that part out.I used the ground insert sleeve on my first goal and found the goal a little shaky for my taste. Not horrible, just a little too much give. On the second goal I ditched the sleeve. I filled the hole part way with concrete (and some rebar sticking up to almost ground level) so that when it hardened the post would rest on it at the right height. Then another day I inserted the post over a centered rebar and filled the hole the rest of the way. The next day I filled the post with 80 lb concrete. Now that it's all done we're really happy with it. Solid and good quality. But joining the post halves is not for the feint of heart.
