I thought the directions were clear and the parts were well labelled. You will need to two people for some of the later steps, preferably a teen or an adult that can hold something in place while the other lines up the holes for the nuts and bolts. Quality is very good. My 5 year old daughter can raise and lower the basket by herself. I did a modified construction where I left out the bottom pole (which is 28 inches), so now the range is roughly 5' to 7'8". The main purpose of this basket is for my 8 year old to dunk. It is actually nice because my 5 year old can also use it on the lowest setting. This did require some drilling of new holes, but it was no big deal. The third section of pole can definitely be added back later when the kids grow. Overall, I think the quaility is great and the kids love it

The system requires some serious effort to assemble, including drilling through metal, so make sure you have access to an electric or strong portable drill with good bits. The instructions are pretty good and the nuts and bolts are separately bagged to coincide with certain steps, which is great. The adjustment mechanism is the trickiest part and is where the instructions could improve. It took me a couple of false starts to get that assembled correctly. Despite what the salesman at Dick's told me, this system does NOT come with a pole pad. You'd think for $400, they'd include that. Seems a much better deal than paying $150 more for the 54 inch version.

I looked over the Amazon reviews and saw Lifetime products get dinged for their lack of clear instructions and difficulty to assemble. I had intended to steer clear of the brand when buying so I got a 'Rebok' system at CostCo (Lifetime model number 51564) for $249.99 thinking it would be a Lifetime. Wrong answer. From looking at Amazon though, this item is the closest I could see to match it but the list price is 399.99 here and the model number is different. (52" board, 3.5" pole, pictures match up)I had similar difficulties in getting it together as the visual diagrams are pretty poor. I have worked on such diagrams many years in automotive and these are just terrible. They make it more challenging to get this together than it should be.However, once I got it together, I like the finished product so far. (one month of use now)
