I had been searching for a basketball hoop for our 7 year old and was looking for something basic but solid in the $200 price range. With a $400 price tag I didn't even look at this model on Amazon. However I happened to see this same model in stores at Academy Sports for $[...] (not a sale - regular price). Seemed like a steal so I purchased directly from Academy.Assembly: The manufacturer recommends that two adults are required for certain steps, however I did manage to assemble it on my own. I do admit that I almost had a mishap at one point and would recommend the second adult on standby per manufacturer instructions. Assembly was slow but steady and completed in approx 3 hours. The instructions are straightforward.Construction: Seems to be a very solid unit. I like the larger backboard. I have used water in the base and for extra stability laid a bag of sand on the top of the base (I don't actually think I need the sand - just paranoid).Ease of use: Height adjustment is very smooth and simple and has been used frequently. When the kids aren't using the hoop I have been spending some time in the driveway hoping that an NBA scout is driving by looking for a slightly overweight 41 year old star.Durability: too early to tell. If I experience any problems I'll post an update. If no update, then no problems (or maybe I'm too busy with my NBA career).[...]. I honestly don't know if it is worth $400 because I haven't seen Amazon's $200 alternatives in real life.

I too have been looking for a decent sub-200.00 portable system with a large square backboard. Amazon had plenty, but not in my range. We just had an Academy Sports open up in our hometown and I was there on day 1 of the Grand Opening. Glad that I did go, I was able to get 50.00 off the regular 199.00 price, which made this thing a steal. My 7yr old daughter was at school, so I spent most of the day setting it up. One thing I would suggest: 2 people. Since it was only me, I had to man-handle the thing a bit and be creative especially when it came to installing the backboard to the support pole. It was a fun solo project for half-day. All parts/pieces came with the system and the instructions were clearly spelled out.Not sure why it's not on Amazon anymore ... but whatever, got a great deal....oh, and for you guys ... get the wife's permission on where to place the thing, 'cuz moving it around is a ***ch after you pump in the 40gal of water.

The only reason this has four stars instead of five was an issue with the instructions. When I opened the instructions, on the first page it tells you what tools you need for the first few steps. It showed a 1/2 inch wrench and a 9/16 wrench. So I began to put the unit together and discovered the bolts were metric, not standard like the book showed. No problem for me I have both, but it could be pretty frustrating for someone who drives to the store to buy the wrenches they think they need, only to find out the instructions are wrong. The only other issue we had, was the backboard had some scuff marks. So you might wanna check your packaging for damage.ASSEMBLY;I'm a mechanical guy so assembly only took me 2.5 hours by myself, but I did need help to attach the pole to the base. I do suggest having someone on hand, because some of it can be tricky and heavy. Having a set of saw horses is also helpful.OPERATION;Adjusting the rim height is way easier than I ever imagined, believe it or not when you pull the locking pin out it doesn't move. What I mean is, the first time I adjusted it I braced myself when I pulled the pin out, because I wasn't sure what would happen. Well nothing happened it didn't move at all, It didn't fall or shoot up it stayed right where it was. That surprised me, the design is so good you can adjust it up and down with one hand.PLAY/USE;This was a gift for my teenage sons, and they love it. We played with it the whole first day with zero problems. The angle of the post is great, you don't have to worry about running into it as much as some of the older styles with the straight post.Price; You can probably find this way cheaper at a store near you. Amazons price is high and with the shipping costs their price is way higher! Try Walmart.Overall this is a great product. It is well made and we should get years of enjoyment out of it.
